Thrills and Quality Tennis in the First Round of the ONTIER Cup

The first two days of the final phase of the ONTIER Cup 2018 have brought large crowds to the facilities of the Oviedo tennis club, which offers free and open entrance throughout the whole tournament of ITF Futures, which allow players to qualify for ATP scores.

There have been no major surprises in these first two days of competition, with intense matches and a high tennis level. Eduard Esteve, head of series number two, beat the Namibian Tuki Jacobs in two sets (6-4 and 6-3). Young Alberto Colás did the same with the Briton Isaac Stoute (6-4 and 6-0), and Benjamin Winter also beat Alex Martí (6-4 and 6-4) in a Spanish duel.

Álvaro López, winner of the ONTIER Cup in 2016, had a bit of a harder time to beat the Swiss Vullnet Tashi (6-4, 1-6 and 7-5). That also happened to senior player Roberto Menendez (42 years old), the only player from Asturias in the final draw, who beat Brazilian Diego Matos (6-7 (4), 6-1 and 7-6 (3)) on the third set's tie break.

Israeli player Yshai Oliel (18 years old) found a much more easy scenario to move forward to the round of 16, winning two sets against Spaniard Juan Pablo Cañas (6-3 and 6-0). Another favourite, the Brazilian Orlando Luz, won in three sets (3-6, 7-6 (2) and 6-4) to Spaniard Alberto Romero de Avila on Tuesday. Fabrizio Ornago, Italy's fifth favourite, was not as lucky, as he was beaten by Marc Fornell-Mestres (4-6, 6-2, 6-3) in the first round.

Today the competition will continue with the singles round of 16, hoping for good weather conditions in Oviedo. To check the complete scoreboard and all the results, you can visit the official website of the tournament or the ITF's website.
